On Sept. 17, 2016, Kayla Melo, activities assistant at Evergreen House Health Center in East Providence, Rhode Island, received the 2016 Rhode Island Health Care Association Team Spirit Award.
The award was presented during the organization’s annual awards luncheon, held this year in Warwick. Although Melo was unable to attend the banquet because she was traveling, her facility team surprised her before she left and let her know about the award.
“It felt wonderful to be recognized for the passion and joy I bring to and receive from the residents,” said Melo. “To make a difference in the residents’ lives by bringing them happiness feels very fulfilling.”
One way Melo brings extra joy to the residents is by dressing up for different events. She has also baked homemade goods for the residents, and she embraces the large population of Portuguese residents, helping them feel at home with their customs, traditions and music.
“She has truly helped our activities department shine!” said Patti Caito, activity director.
One resident shared, “I look to Kayla as if she were my own granddaughter, and our daily walk in the hallways makes me happy!”
“What I enjoy most about my job is being part of a team that gives our residents a good quality of life,” Melo added. “I enjoy being able to express my personality. I enjoy working in the mornings and being able to give the residents their coffee to start off the day right with a big smile!”
